DISCOVER THE MAJESTIC DIOCLETIAN PALACE IN SPLIT


Now that travel restrictions are being lifted or eased around the world, it’s time to dust off the old passport again and get moving. With the total lifting of restrictions in May 2022, Croatia is a good place to reintroduce yourself to the world of travel. And the place to start is the majestic Diocletians Palace of Split, which is not that far away from our Pikolo Apartment Complex.

THE HISTORY


Built at the turn of the 4th century, the palace was to be, among other things, the retirement home of Roman emperor Diocletian. It also served as a military fort. It is, in fact, a fully eclosed, self-contained town. Today, the palace is the vibrant core of Split with numerous shops, bars and eateries.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED IN SPLIT?


The palace is located at the southwestern end of the city and overlooks the Adriatic Sea. The lagoon that the palace lies on is also home to Split’s harbor and Croatia’s main passenger terminal.

IS SIGHTSEEING AT DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE IN SPLIT EVEN POSSIBLE?


There is a lot to see and do in and around Diocletian’s Palace. Entrance to the palace area is free and open to the general public for 24 hours. Certain buildings are restricted and subject to an admission charge.

THE OPENING HOURS AND THE TICKET PRICES


As mentioned, the city precinct of the palace is open to the general public. As a functional part of the city, there is no restriction on access to the general area. However, tickets are required for certain buildings. Prices are as follows:

  • The underground cellars Kn 42
  • The cathedral Kn 15
  • The bell tower Kn 15
  • Jupiter temple Kn 10

The access-restricted areas are typically open from 9 am to 6 pm. Ticket prices and opening hours may change from time to time.

WHERE CAN YOU PARK?


There are several parking garages dotted around within easy walking distance. Street parking is also an option and rates vary from less than a dollar an hour to around $25 per day.

HOW TO GET THERE FROM PIKOLO APARTMENTS?


Getting to the Diocletians Palace in Split from Pikolo apartments is easy. It takes less than 40 minutes by car along the scenic D8 coastal highway. A taxi will set you back as much as $50 but, for around $10, you can go by bus. That’s just a 45 minute trip and saves the stress of driving and parking.
